<g:plusone size="small" href="http://blog.martinmcdowell.com/first-day-in-orlando-89.html"></g:plusone>

The wind tunnel training started a day before I expected so I had to get up at about 6am. I did 5×2 minutes in the morning, then another 5×2 minutes in the afternoon and I have just completed another 2×2 minutes session. I have now finished debriefing and it is ten minutes to one in the morning! By my home watch it is just before 6am!

Don’t even think that flying in a wind tunnel is easy and not exhausting. My back is VERY sore. However I did manage to get some time and see a bit of Orlando from their buses. The one we used was very interesting and here is a photo to prove it. We passed a very funny building that looked like it was ripped out of the ground and landed on another one. It was probably also a bit of a joke on the hurricanes they tend to get here in Florida. As I was in the bus at the time I couldn’t get a decent photo of it.

I am otherwise surprised how much unusual and different everything is to me here. It is almost I still cannot believe I am in the U.S. It’s so much different from any European country I have visited till now. In fact, till now I have not been outside the European continent, if we count out that trip to Istanbul where I took a touristy boat ride to the Asian side of the city. And it seems that the people who said, that Americans love their SUVs were absolutely correct. The the majority of the population, that don’t have one at home, wished they could have one.
And now to report on the weather: is makes a nice change from the relatively cold and damp Pembrokeshire weather, here is is quite hot during the day with just a bit to cold nights. Well shouldn’t complain, it is mid February!

As I was a bit unexperienced and without my own equipment I could trust I had to say no.
The next year the organized it again and I, again, had to say no as I was financially and timewisw preoccuppied with my move to Wales.
Third time will be the charm! Well it will just have to be as I have made the reservation day before yesterday for the Tunnelcamp Florida February 2008 that is organized by the Slovene 4-way team SkyDragons. As far as I understand it is open to all: skydivers from Slovenia and from abroad.
I am still not sure whether I will be able to go for two or for three weeks, depending on how much time off I will be able to take at work. The plan is to do a few days of tunnel training at SkyVenture Orlando and then over a week of skydiving at the regional DZs like Titusville, Tampa Bay, DeLand etc.
Here is what SkyVenture looks like as seen on Google Maps Street View:

Ling to Google Maps Street View

I hope it all goes well, fingers crossed. The next step is to pay the deposit and then start to find a good (meaning not to expensive) airplane ticket. I was hoping for a direct flight so the only real alternatives to Orlando are from London, probably with Virgin Atlantic.

It was a great day probably more suitable for outdoor skydiving than indoor skydiving. I set of from home early Saturday morning and arrived at Bedford five and a half hours later after stupidly ignoring my satnav and adding another hour to my already long journey. The Bodyflight facility is situated in a generally abandoned ex-military complex outside of Bedford near the A6. I heard it was used to do tests for the Concorde. One of the things it does include besides Bodyflight is also a Red Bull formula 1 wind tunnel testing facility.
OK, if anyone is interested in going there be prepared to do a bit of walking – up the soddin’ stairs. To get to the Bodyflight reception they make you walk up all the way to the third floor
I soon found my mates Jaks, Petra, Emillio and Maja exercising 4-way positions on the Bodyflight training room. It was nice to see them all after all this time away, I also got the opportunity to speak more Slovene than in all the last three months in total.

You can see the picture gallery on my Picasa site.

The wind tunnel in Bedford is one of the biggest (if not the biggest) in the world as it is 5m wide. It is also probably built much better than the more common US Skyventure wind tunnels. You can see it was not originally built for skydiving – not to put down the sport but usually skydiving is not a big business as there is not a lot of money involved in its funding – even at competition level you still have to invest quite a lot of your own money into the sport.

Although Jaka, Petra, Emillio and Maja took this opportunity to do their proper wind-tunnel training and o use the experience gained for “real” throwyourselfoutofaairplane skydiving, I just tried to improve my freefall posture and movements. In the end I “only” did 20 minutes altogether in 2 days but I found out I had quite a few flaws in my posture but also that I could figure out how to move around in freefall by intuitively move the right part of my body. David Sawyer, one of the Bodyflight instructors, made me realize that I was still much to stiff in the upper body and Jason Richardson, that I was much to less rigid in my lower body – legs. I would probably need a few more jumps to bring it all together. The truth is, if anyone has done a few skydive jumps before going in a wind tunnel do NOT expect the same feeling – believe me, it is different as flying within a confine of a wind tunnel does strange things to your senses. The air flow is also different, especially if there are more skydivers in the tunnel. But it does make it easier to correct any wrong postures as you feel immediately if you are not stable and moving up or down or towards the wall. And because there is a wall there I suggest you equip yourself with elbow and knee protectors – don’t worry, they are provided by Bodyflight on request.
